Should the Watauga County Commissioners allow the local farmers’ market to operate in the parking lot of the county’s social services building? On the surface, one might see hints of a definition of socialism. That concerns nobody who can cast a vote. The reason for relocating the market is that its organizers feel they are paying the private sector too much to continue operating at the current location. The commissioners are primarily interested in sustaining the farmers’ market, and secondarily in helping the county’s revenue stream. Some wish to set rent to at least cover the costs of wear and tear from tent stakes. Others would be happy to charge $1. The commissioners would not be conflicted if the farmers could sell their goods as a nonprofit activity. How to deal with outsiders who could undercut local growers is another problem.
