A trial court will take another look at whether lobbyist Don Beason should face fines in connection with alleged lobbying work done on behalf of an Indian steel maker challenging North Carolina’s “Buy America” law. That’s after the N.C. Court of Appeals handed down three opinions this morning in connection with cases involving Beason and his son Mark.

In two of the three cases, a unanimous three-judge panel affirmed the trial court’s ruling: one favoring Mark Beason in his bid to avoid a $6,000 penalty, the other going against Don Beason in his fight against a larger penalty. In the third case, the appellate judges ruled the trial court had erred by not applying the proper definition of lobbying to determine whether Don Beason had engaged in illegal lobbying. Appellate judges ordered that case to head back to the trial court.
