The incredible push by greenies, lefties, corporate entities and even government to have us all switch to compact fluorescent lighting has been amazing to behold. Even right-of-center bloggers have gotten in on the act. But only after millions of these bulbs have replaced completely fine incandescents in the past year or so do we learn that they’re an environmental hazard:

As state and federal policies increasingly promote energy efficiency, many North Carolina households will switch to compact fluorescent lights.

But because they contain trace elements of mercury, disposing of the lights or cleaning up a broken one is not a simple proposition.

Notice in that story linked above that there is no blame-placing, as there usually is in the mainstream media when somebody screws up. No, the enviros and the greenies get a pass. This is just some passive-voice problem (“mistakes were made”) that will need to be fixed by even more governmental intrusion into our lives. How long will it be before we’re required to have hazmat teams to replace our broken bulbs? This sounds like a new business opportunity for companies that take asbestos out of our houses?
