The governor of Oregon is expected to sign a law that makes it illegal to smoke in your car while a kid is with you. It sounds like the nanny-staters’ dream law — except some Oregon nanny-staters say it’s not strict enough. Here is what passes for policy debate from those in Oregon who aren’t content to simply disagree with another person’s action, but instead use the power of government to make it illegal.

Thompson said the Legislature already has passed bans on smoking in bars, restaurants and legislative chambers.

“It is, however, legal to strap your kids in the back of a car and smoke them like bacon,” Thompson said.

How long do you think it will be before feeding a child a cheeseburger becomes an offense in Oregon? How long before listening to conservative talk shows with a child in the car becomes an offense in Oregon? Laugh if you like, but did you ever think the mayor of a major city would come oh-so-close to banning the sale of large sugary sodas?
