Remember that unauthorized NC Central University satellite campus that was discovered to be operating out of an Atlanta church? Well, the feds want their student loan money back, now that everybody knows the degree programs weren’t accredited.

Exactly how much money the feds want returned, and where it’s going to come from, are still a mystery, according to UNC President Erskine Bowles. From the News & Observer:

“We will have a significant liability,” Bowles told members of the audit committee of the UNC system’s Board of Governors. “How much, we do not know at this time. The source of funds and the payment plan, we do not know at this time.”

The only thing absolutely clear is Bowles’ anger. The N&O story refers to him as “disgusted with NCCU’s prior leadership.” James Ammons is the former chancellor.

Bowles said Thursday that after months of work on the issue, he still has no explanation for the program’s origins.

“I still do not know,” he said. “I can think of no justifiable reason whatsoever why the previous leadership at NCCU would completely fail” to follow proper rules.
