Strikes me as odd that Steve Arnold and Mike Winstead, the two Guilford County commissioners in the construction business and who oppose the contractor-at-risk method for construction of the new $115 million jail, weren’t even at the work session where the CM-at-risk method was approved.

Commission chairman Kirk Perkins “initially said the commissioners wouldn’t vote on the contracting method on Tuesday, but would instead refer the issue to a regular meeting of the full board,” but fellow Commissioner Billy Yow “pushed the issue to a vote,” saying commissioners already knew how everyone was going to vote, so “we might as well vote now.”

I realize commissioners’ work sessions are open to the public, but I don’t think it’s stretch to say that the public would be better informed if the issue were discussed during a regular meeting.

That said, we shouldn’t be surprised when $115 million isn’t enough.
