Isaam Mattay Chaplin was arrested yesterday on the N.C. A&T campus when university police were called to check on an argument taking place outside Campbell Hall. Chaplin has been charged with first-degree murder in the Dec. 15 shooting of Brinks driver Juan Salado at the Friendly Center Old Navy store.

The N&R congratulates the Greensboro Police Department on Chapin’s arrest and yesterday’s successful high-speed chase and shootout on Interstate 40 and Patterson Avenue that left one suspect dead. But GPD had plenty of help, from the bank employee who reported the robbery and then followed the perpetrators, not to mention A&T campus police officer Tony Scott, who initially arrested Chapin.

Police Chief Tim Bellamy gave “the highest of accolades” to everyone who helped get these thugs off the streets.
