That’s the reaction of Wake County resident Joan Swiger to the revelations of taxpayer-funded whale-watching trips and Magic Kingdom jaunts by a now-fired Wake County employee, which I blogged about yesterday. From the News & Observer’s story today:

“It made me so mad I’ve been furious all day long,” said Swiger, 85, a Raleigh widow who used to work as a furniture store bookkeeper and WakeMed personnel manager. “I’ve contended for years these people are as crooked as a dog’s hind legs. If I were running that department, they’d all be fired.”

Swiger was among the dozens of residents who called and sent e-mail messages to The News & Observer on Tuesday after an article about Craig P. Wittig, the former recycling program manager for the solid waste management division. Readers also posted comments on newsobserver.com.

So my question to Wake County Manager David Cooke is this: When will you conduct a full audit of the nearly $6 million in credit card purchases made last year by Wake County employees? Most citizens will stipulate that most county employees are honest, but if whale-watching trips didn’t cause a red flag, what else has been charged on the public dime?
