The State Bureau of Investigation does not wish to publish results of a certification test taken by its analysts. They took the test to satisfy an auditor’s concerns two years ago that “hundreds of blood examinations had been incorrectly reported” and that “the SBI lab’s policies and procedures improperly favored prosecutors.” Unfortunately, “about two dozen” analysts failed the test. That puts in jeopardy a number of cases that could have been tried with unreliable evidence. Crime lab director Joseph John argues, not in so many words, that certification is a revenue stream for government, and test questions could have been totally irrelevant to job descriptions in many cases. Appeals to the judicial system have been made to help the test results see daylight.
