I admit it. I was prepared to be underwhelmed by WCNC’s new blog, but I’m not. There’s some actual interesting stuff that you don’t see elsewhere, at least not from a Charlotte angle. Stuff like a behind the scenes look at what a TV cameraman does during a police stand-off. And I had no clue the live van is the Scarlet Letter of the TV news biz:

Assignment editors are those fine folks that herd reporters and photographers around the news room like Border Collies herd sheep. On this particular evening my assignment editor informed me that she would like for me to report to work two hours earlier than I usually do. “Oh,” she said before letting me escape her grasp for the night, “and you will need to take a live van home too.”

Nooooooo, I wailed to myself. Not the dreaded live van. Now everyone in my neighborhood will know where I work because of the rolling billboard parked in my driveway overnight. I’m not ready for my neighbors to pester me with unending questions about my “glamorous” job.

And don’t some neighborhoods get all bent out of shape if any commercial vehicle is parked in a driveway over night? Can’t have that.
