Peeling signs were uniquely Asheville, but a little too diverse for city fathers. Therefore, the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) has hired another firm to apply the reflective material with the manufacturer’s specifications and use bolts instead of screws to attach the signs to the posts. The estimated cost of repairs is $280,000; the initial project cost $1.65 million. Nobody is complaining because revenues from the local hotel tax, or taxation without representation, paid for the project. The project entailed the forming and planting of over 300 wayfinding devices primarily for government attractions in Buncombe County.
