In light of the recent Supreme Court ruling that military recruiters be allowed to recruit on campuses that get Federal funding:

Statement from the Socialist Unity League on 21.2.06 / UNCA

Today, over sixty students successfully confronted military recruiters on UNCA?s campus. Forty students marched across the quad to the Highsmith Union, where several other students were waiting at a reserved table across from the NC Army National Guard recruiters. As the protestors proceeded to fill the hall with chants and slogans demanding that the recruiters leave, the majority of the students passing through Highsmith Union stopped to join the demonstration and voice their support.

After we blocked access to the recruiters? table, we were threatened with the possibility of arrest and the revocation of our status as an official university student organization. Tensions rose as some of the campus police, who were overly eager to make a scene, began to push and threaten us while trying to pull down our banners. Let?s not forget that these are the same police who just received new shotguns and handguns to ?protect? our university! A compromise was reached, and we agreed to stay across the hall from the recruiters. The protest lasted for three hours ? the length of time that the recruiters were allowed to stay on our campus. At 3:30pm we escorted them to their vehicles, and it was all over.
