At 6 a.m. today The News & Observer‘s Web site played the arrest of Crystal Gail Mangum this way (sorry, no screen grab available):
Headline: “Durham woman charged with arson”
Lede paragraph: “Police filed several charges against a Durham woman in connection with a fire at 2220 Lincoln St. on Wednesday afternoon.”
By this afternoon (the site says the page had been modified at 12:06 p.m.) these had changed:
New headline: “Duke lacrosse accuser charged with attempted murder”
New lede paragraph: “Durham police have charged Crystal Gail Mangum, 31, with attempting to kill her boyfriend early this morning. Mangum is the woman who wrongly accused three Duke lacrosse players of rape in 2006.”
Did no editor working on the N&O’s copy desk remember the name Crystal Gail Mangum? So soon they forget.
