Just how unusual was that assault on Franklin Street that created such an outcry? Well, the Pope Center had intern Brian Sopp look into it, and here’s what he found.

According to police records, from 2000 to 2004, just on that one block on Franklin Street where the attack took place, there were:

? 12 fights/affrays

? 10 robberies

? 136 assaults ? 111 simple assaults, 25 aggravated assaults (click here for the definitions)

In other words, an assault there is not unusual at all. What is unusual is the university response: rallies, speeches, national attention, and angry calls to change the state laws.

Are the 136 previous victims of assault on that block on Franklin Street less deserving because they weren’t a member of a “protected class?”
