On the heels of an 8-1 Charlotte city council vote to spend $286K to regulate and restrain newspaper racks Uptown, here are a few of the even dumber things going on around the globe:
- Korbel is going to court to force Comcast to give up the IP addys and unique identifiers of Craig’s list posters who said bad things about the winery. I am not making this up.
- A SUNY Potsdam administrator who warned of the need for budget cuts and salary freezes gets a $8600 raise, bringing his salary to a shade under $200K.
- Five state of Nebraska employees videotape themselves hooking up and playing a PlayStation3, and put the results on YouTube. This state-funded exercise is intended to show public libraries what they can do to attract young patrons.
- Houston seriously considers handing out $3000 grants to residents as part of a “Credit Score Enhancement Program” intended to win bank loans for city residents as they paid down their outstanding credit card balances, student loans, car loans, etc. with other people’s money. World-wide ridicule convinces the mayor to re-think the idea. For now.
- The town of Mooresville is told by Bank of America that the bond market is too weak to support $15m. in revenue bonds the town would back in a first-in-the-state development financing deal. Partners in the $800m. Langtree at the Lake development which would benefit from the infrastructure built with the bonds say poppycock, urge the town to plow ahead regardless.
Whoa, that last one is getting close to home. Better stop.
