First up, CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe at his presser yesterday:

This was a random act of violence…

Then Chief Monroe seconds later:

He was looking for someone to rob in that area. …Unfortunately, Mr. Barber came along.

So then CMPD does not believe Chauncey Sterling, 18, acted randomly in making his way to a wealthy section of Charlotte before approaching a solitary, distinguished-looking older gentleman with the intent of forcibly taking valuables from him. Seems we are right back to the squeamishness about home invasions not really being home invasions — remember that one? — and whether South CLT is targeted for property crime.

Nevermind. Something tells me that if this turns into the capital case it should be, we’ll hear plenty about intent and malice aforethought.

Bonus A-Ha: What a surprise that the accused in this case had bonded out of a prior charge just a few weeks ago. Was he on the hunt for a quick score to pay back his bond?
