The construction of a Corolla-to Currituck ferry has been
a fiasco since the General Assembly appropriated $834,000 for the
project in June 2003, at Sen. Marc Basnight’s urging. Don
Carrington has reported on illegal dredging, questionable actions by state
officials, concerns over size and safety of the pontoon boat, and
questions about the need for the service. This week, Carrington
wrote about the latest development: a deal brokered by Basnight and
other officials to salvage the project by building an 1800-foot pier,
the longest on the East Coast. The goal of the pier is to satisfy
environmental concerns over potential damage boats can inflict on the
area. Thursday night, Carrington joined “The Lockwood Phillips Show” on
WTKF to explain the giant pier proposal and all the developments along
the way. Read the series here.
