After serving as President Pro Tem of the N.C. Senate since 1993, Marc Basnight announced this morning that he will resign his seat effective Jan. 25.
Basnight, a Manteo Democrat, beat his Republican opponent 55-45 percent in November. He has been in the Senate since 1984.
At a press conference today, Basnight told reporters that he was resigning due to his health.
As one of his last actions in office, Basnight requested the state borrow $3.3 million to continue renovations of a Lake Mattamuskeet Lodge in Hyde County.
Carolina Journal‘s Don Carrington reported on the lodge in 2009, including complaints from locals concerned that a renovated lodge would divert money from other lodging businesses in the area.
