The N&R reports that one of the Greensboro Police officers investigated for sexual assault is leaving the force.

It was a solid story, though I have one beef: It goes on too long about the allegations in J.O. LeGrand’s resignation letter before revealing a surprising twist involving Police Chief Tim Bellamy at the very end:

LeGrand says in the letter that Bellamy is friends with the accuser’s husband, who is not a police officer, so LeGrand doesn’t feel that the chief can treat him fairly in a departmental hearing.

“That’s his opinion,” Bellamy said. “And it’s not mine.”

The public is well aware that Greensboro police officers have kept some pretty interesting company in the past, so I would think Bellamy would make quite an effort to prove there’s no conflict of interest.
