The Orange County Commissioners held a retreat. On the subject of taxes, Commissioner Mike Nelson had this to say, according to the News & Observer, which makes him my nominee for best Orange County quote of January so far.

“We need to dig down and find out really why we’ve had 18 years of tax increases,” said Commissioner Mike Nelson. “Eighteen years in a row is a long time.”

I have two suggestions for the commissioner, both of which will answer his question very quickly.

First, line up all the county commissioners and then look in the mirror.

Second, read the entire N&O story, which lists all the things the commissioners want to do, including child care subsidies, affordable housing (ironically coupled with land preservation policy which limits supply and pushes up costs, thereby DECREASING affordability of housing), broadband access, agricultural initiatives, etc., etc..

Amazing that some elected officials fail to see the direct connection between their policies and the people forced to pay for them.
