It may have taken them 100 years to see the light but Israel’s oldest kibbutz has finally discarded their experiment in socialism and installed free-market capitalism. Even the people on the Mayflower did it quicker than the people in kibbutz Deganya A, established in 1910.

“In the end we have to be fair with ourselves, the dream of total equality is a dream that did not exist,” says Gavri Bargil, head of Israel’s kibbutz movement. “I want to believe and I hope that part of the kibbutzim will remain in the classic way. There is something very pure about it. But I think in another decade most of the kibbutzim will live according to this new way of life.”

I wonder if they have a newspaper in Deganya A. Everyone else in the world learned that socialism was a dead end by 1991.
