In anticipation of tonight’s big UNCG-Davidson game at the Greensboro Coliseum, the N&R points out that the coliseum’s four-year agreement to host Spartan basketball is a big risk, as if most anything involving the coliseum isn’t a big risk:

The worst-case scenario – according to some early calculations by coliseum director Matt Brown – is that the plan could lose about $195,000, which would be split evenly between the coliseum and the university. And that still relies on drawing at least 50,000 fans for the season.

In the best-case scenario, estimates show, the partners would split a $318,000 profit. But that depends on visits by Duke or UNC, and Brown said neither had committed yet.

……Brown said next season the coliseum would be lucky to attract 3,000 ticket holders to a game against a nonmarquee opponent. But games like Davidson show what’s possible. “It shows what a big game can do to offset a small game,” Brown said.

I’m doing my part, though: I’ll be there tonight, wearing my UNCG T-shirt, doing my part to help the coliseum turn a profit.
