The community organization CHANGE (Communities Helping All Neighbors Gain Empowerment) is pushing Reps. Larry Womble and Earline Parmon to introduce legislation that would make Forsyth County school board elections non-partisan.

Womble and Parmon pulled the bill from the legislative calendar after hearing opposition from Republican members of Forsyth’s delegation, but say they plan to introduce it this week. At the very least, Republicans want an amendment that would require a referendum, but CHANGE thinks 10,000 petition signatures and a crowd of 700 at its spring assembly indicates popular support for the bill.

I realize that the vast majority of North Carolina’s school boards are non-partisan. My major point of reference is the nonpartisan Guilford County Board of Education, and I’ve expressed my views on how well it operates many times on this blog.
