No, that’s not what USA Today’s headline says, but it’s pretty much the same thing:

Bill Clinton helps Democrats claim mantle of fiscal responsibility

Former president Bill Clinton is scheduled to join a conference call this afternoon of House Democrats bragging about pay-as-you-go legislation set for a vote today.

Clinton’s presence on the call is a clear effort by Democrats to remind voters that it was their party that brought the nation its last budget surplus. …

That may be true, but given the choices made by Democrats in Congress since 2007 and by the current president, a Democrat, that “mantle of fiscal responsibility” isn’t going to be theirs ever.

Good grief, the Democrats’ fiscal irresponsibility has skyrocketed since the last time Obama trotted out that horse-laugher of a supposed desire for that mantle.

Not that the Republicans are paragons of fiscal responsibility, by no means, but the symbol of GOP malfeasance (the Bridge to Nowhere) pales in comparison to the shenanigans of the current crew of Democrats. Democrats should just own what they are: big spenders, favor peddlers, and mortgagers of the future in the hopes of digging out the present. Hailing the virtues of fiscal responsibility before spending like stoners with stolen credit cards has grown very, very, very tiresome.

As I wrote last summer,

The skank pictured above would be considered a virgin again
before Pres. Obama could ever be thought of as fiscally responsible

At this point, John Edwards and Mark Sanford would tie for Husband of the Year before Democrats could gain any recognition for fiscal responsibility. But I’ll give ’em a hint: if that’s what they want, being actually fiscally responsible for a change would go a long way toward helping.
