I try to avoid moral relativity when it comes to politics and race, but following recent of criticism of Greensboro Mayor Bill Knight’s ‘adversarial’ relationship with his constituents comes comments from the Rev. Cardes Brown during last night’s council discussion (unposted) of the White Street landfill:

Brown said the council was unwilling to listen to the residents of predominantly black Northeast Greensboro who said they are worried about health issues and property values if the landfill reopens. He said the City Council’s decision amounts to racism.

Brown focused on Knight, who he called ‘one of the biggest racists I have ever met.’

I’ll be fair— the N&R has also been critical of Guillford County Commission Chair Skip Alston, who is black. But Brown’s comments are particularly absurd, and I hope the editorialists at our local paper of record take note and denounce them.
