The High Point Enterprise reports the Gate City Billiards Country Club is expected to appeal the state’s smoking ban.

Guilford County Attorney Mark Payne explains:

The establishment wants to claim private club status, Payne said. The new law requires an appeal to the health board following several citations.

“We have less than a dozen establishments who are repeat offenders and this one wants to test the law with an appeal,” Payne said. “The billiards club changed its name, adding country. The law exempts country clubs as a subset of private clubs. This club does not meet the private club criteria.”

The county health board will issue a ruling, and from there an appeal would go to the court system, Payne further explained.
