The News & Observer is cluck-clucking that too many of its readers failed to ace its Black History Month quiz. When I saw the headline I figured I’d see questions about George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington or Frederick Douglass. I mean, that’s history. But what I saw was a quiz with questions about stuff that happened to black celebrities last week. It reminded me of the time one of my kids came home from school as asked why they were studying Famous Amos in history class during Black History Month instead of something really important, like, say, the Dred Scott vs. Sanford and Brown vs. Board of Education decisions. If The N&O‘s any example, black history has devolved into little more than a game of racist trivia.
