Carolina Journal‘s efforts to uncover details of the land deal that helped former N.C. House Speaker Jim Black pay off his $1 million corruption fine continued to attract attention from other media outlets this week. Stories by Meck Deck blogger Jeff Taylor and CJ Associate Editor David Bass led to questions about the land deal’s propriety. The News & Observer‘s education blog mentioned CJ‘s role in the investigation, then both the News & Observer and Charlotte Observer mentioned CJ in printed articles about the Black case. Speaking of Taylor, he was involved in another high-profile media event this week. The Charlotte Observer followed up one of his blog posts for an article about the local school system’s decision to cut teaching positions, rather than administrative personnel, to deal with budget woes. The Observer‘s initial story led to an editorial, cartoons, and television and radio coverage — all based on Taylor’s original Meck Deck observation.
