I also missed the outing of the Greensboro City Council member as I read suspended GPD officer A.J. Blake’s statement. Turns out it wasn’t there, although Blake’s brother later made the claim that council member Mike Barber “implied” an offer to get assault charges against Blake dismissed in exchange for Blake removing his name from a discrimination lawsuit against the city.

Speaking at last night’s council meeting, Barber said he and Blake spoke only about the city’s suspended-without-pay policy, and Blake was coming to Barber as a constitutent. Barber added that when news broke that he was going to implicate a council member, Blake called to apologize, adding that he hadn’t seen the press release, which was authored by —you guessed it— the Rev. Dr. Cardes Brown.

Nice to know who’s pulling the strings here, as if we didn’t already know.

Update: I relied on memory when making this post last night, but I just now watched a replay of last night’s City Council meeting and need to tweek some technicalities in the interest of accuracy. Barber said that Blake apologized through his attorney, and the exact author of the press release, which was sent by Rev. Nelson Johnson, wasn’t stated, although Cardes Brown is the listed press contact.
