Speaking of Heath Shuler, he’s a good example of why the Democrats have no one but themselves to blame for the split in their party over abortion funding.

I make that argument in an American Spectator column this morning.

The Democratic leadership purposefully ran moderate candidates, particularly those of pro-life conviction, in swing districts in 2006. The strategy succeeded, but it only produced a numbers majority and not always an ideological majority.

That explains the 64 Democrats who defied Pelosi and voted for the pro-life language in the Stupak amendment.
