The N.C. Board of Elections has voted to refer its information about former Rep. Michael Decker and optometrist M. Scott Edwards to the Wake County District Attorney for possible criminal prosecution.

Elections board chairman Larry Leake made the motion. He said Wake D.A. Colon Willoughby has agreed to sift through the information to determine whether other district attorneys need to be involved in the case.

The board says it will continue its investigation into possible campaign finance law violations. The board will reconvene sometime before mid-March to continue its work.

At that time, the board could consider penalties against some of the individuals and campaign committees involved in this week’s hearings.

Decker and Edwards both refused to testify in this week’s hearing — citing their Fifth Amendment rights not to incriminate themselves.
