As you can probably imagine, I totally support the lawsuit filed by private hoteliers Mike Weaver and Dennis Quaintance to “invalidate the federal stimulus financing” for the proposed downtown luxury hotel.

But —- as you can also imagine —– I’m wary of Quaintance’s general views on bond financing:

Greensboro and Guilford County have a great opportunity in the bond financing, Quaintance said in an interview Thursday, and locally elected officials need to make sure it’s used as best it can be.

“In order to take full advantage and give this area the stimulus it needs, you have to have a good process,” Quaintance said. “And in the process we’ve seen, there’s just no criteria. There’s no evaluation of these projects.”

Yeah, but I have to wonder how happy Quaintance would be if a so-called “good process” resulted in another project that would directly compete with his hotel business.

It’s hard to have it both ways, which is why it would have been best if local leaders had just said ‘thanks but no thanks’ in the first place.
