The future of Boone’s Downtown Business Development Association is in flux. The association uses $115,000 in annual, special-district tax revenues and private donations to organize gallery crawls, plant flowers, install benches, and display maps for tourists. Last spring, the Boone Town Council voted against renewing its contract with the association. A month later, the council reneged, signed a six-month contract and formed a task force to study the association. In November, the task force recommended replacing the association with a new nonprofit to be led by a town staff member. The council voted against the recommendation and for another interim contract to allow for more study. The interim contract will expire at the end of the fiscal year.
