“Under the Dome” floats that possibility today. One can see why a new Democratic administration would be interested in a guy who could help broker a big deal between the likes of Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich.

But a departure from Chapel Hill would mark a first for the UNC system. Previous presidents of the multicampus system never have left for greener pastures. Bill Friday served for three decades, C.D. Spangler served another decade, and Bowles’ immediate predecessor ? Molly Broad ? served for eight years.
