Hendersonville City Councilman Jerry Smith’s peers rejected his proposal to reopen negotiations in a five-party deal. The city and county, Pardee Hospital, and two local colleges want to build a new health sciences building. Smith argued a renegotiation could delay the city’s already postponed “need” to raise taxes. A majority of other council members stressed the importance of keeping their word and fears that a renegotiated contract might wind up worse.
