At least until Elizabeth “clarifies” the story again, the Associated Press is reporting that “Edwards seeks to show a rich man can care about poor“:

Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards has a ready answer the criticism about his expensive haircuts and huge home.

The former North Carolina senator says a man can be wealthy and care about poor people.

Touché! Edwards dips deep into his rhetorical well and makes another epic pronouncement fit for an eight-grade girl’s journal.

What a signature cause! I don’t know where the Sam Walton that he got the idea that rich men don’t care about the poor. Wealthy men and women in this nation have been generous throughout our nation’s history, more so the less government is seizing their wealth through confiscatory taxes (charitable giving boomed following the Reagan tax cuts). And I would never accuse John Edwards of not caring about the poor; he cherishes, even covets, their votes.
