An editorial in today’s N&O compared the state budget to a family eating beans. An agriculture expert and I checked the market price of beans and found that $20 billion would buy a lot of beans. Specifically, it would buy 103 billion pounds of soybeans (1.7 billion bushel) at $11.10 per bushel. That’s enough beans to provide a four-ounce serving to every North Carolinian at every meal for 40 years, 7 months, and 2 days.
