The people have no discretionary funds, but those in business want to sell things to pay their bills. The obvious question is, “What can be sold to people without money?” The answer has been known a long time. Addicts will spend what they don’t have and drive themselves to the poorhouse to get another fix. Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee will be able to decide whether or not they want to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages on the res. Now that Chief Michell Hicks and Governor Beverly Perdue have agreed on how to split profits, the band must decide where it wants to allow alcohol sales. The chief wants it sold only in tribal stores, but local businesses were looking forward to being able to partake of the revenue stream as well.
