Not too long ago, this blog borrowed a quote from Gone with the Wind about land being the only thing that mattered because it is the only thing that lasts. That was then, and this is now, a time when government wants to acquire land, while convincing its loyal subjects that the only thing that matters is libations – flowing streams of intoxicating revenue-generators.

The Franklin Board of Aldermen approved the purchase of a $1.25 million space for a new 6400 sq. ft. ABC store. They argued the move was fiscally responsible because the price equals fifteen years of rent at the old place. The county doesn’t have to worry about a mortgage or taxes, and the way government thinks, the property will not deteriorate without maintenance.

Alderman Bob Scott tendered the only nay vote. He did not challenge the gist of the move; he merely opposed contracting with a Tennessee company for construction.
