Raleigh entrepreneur, Lauren “Gracie” Updyke, was about to lose her business until she showcased her innovative sports bra on Kickstarter and let consumers vote yes or no with their investment dollars.

A few tweets and Facebook posts later, and the results were “astounding.”

Kickstarter doesn’t just raise money, it allows companies to sell inventory. Updyke saw about 55,000 online sales through Kickstarter in the 30-day period. That compares favorably to her previous best of 36,000 sales in a year.

Money will go toward scaling up inventory and producing additional colors.

It is wonderful to see risk-takers rewarding for building a better mousetrap — or in this case, a better sports bra.
