Tonight, the Buncombe County school board will vote on a resolution to support raising the county sales and use tax by one-quarter cent. County residents will vote on the referendum next month.

If voters approve the measure, the Buncombe County Schools will not receive any of the money.  County commissioners plan to give the additional tax revenue to Asheville-Buncombe Community College for facilities improvements.  Nevertheless, some members of the school board want to affirm their support for the tax increase.  I do not know how many voters will be swayed (or surprised) by this resolution, but I suspect that there are more important issues for the school board to discuss than this.

Here is one that deserves a lot of attention.

Note: The John Locke Foundation recently assessed that proposal in a report titled A Blank Check for Buncombe.  We concluded that the tax increase was a bad deal for residents of Buncombe County.
