Another reason for the dwindling success of newspapers occurred to me today. On the front page of the Asheville Tribune was an ad for Carter’s Homes with a $10,000 off coupon. Their business will be adversely affected by Buncombe County’s new zoning ordinance since un-grandfathered mobile homes are now outlawed in low-density residential districts. Unlike the enlightened progressive papers in town, the Tribune took up for the mobile home industry and low-income families that would be priced out of mortgages with the commissioners’ sense of vogue. I’m suspecting as government continues to take an anti-business stance, capitalists with money are not going to pay the newspapers to promote propaganda that will put them out of business.
