With the debate over forced busing for diversity ramping up in Wake County ? about which Triangle-area folks can find out more on Monday when representatives of Assignment by Choice speak to JLF?s Shaftesbury Society at noon ? it looks like a similar debate could be breaking out in Wilmington.
The proposed New Hanover plan would double the number of children bused, affecting about a third of elementary students, and is explicit about a goal to diversify schools by race, which is legally problematic due to recent federal court decisions. In Wake County, officials are more careful to say their goal is diversity by income, though that still may not head off legal trouble.
