Author and former New York Timesman Charles Kaiser, lamenting the Times‘ hiring of neocon bete noir Bill Kristol (emphasis added):

Last week, Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. managed to enrage practically everyone who still holds the Times to that higher standard by anointing Bill Kristol as the paper’s newest op-ed columnist.

What higher standard? I must ask. The drop in the paper’s circulation, editorial quality and stock value began years ago but accelerated to warp speed after Howell Raines took the reins (har) and later resigned in disgrace.

The freefall continues for the Gray Lady. They hope someone like Kristol can help get things back on track. Somehow, I doubt it.

UPDATE: Newspaperman/blogger Don Surber has more on the NYT’s problems:

Crap like this backfires. It shows how trivial the New York Times has become.

But they seem to do this every 4 years.

Followed by a November news story: “What went wrong for Democrats?”
