The Winston-Salem Journal — to its credit —- gives Gov. Bev Perdue and her “temporary tax hikes” what fer.

But then the paper renews its call for a “21st-century tax system” that would broaden the sales tax:

With a broader sales-tax base, these senators propose to actually cut the overall sales-tax rate. That would mean that North Carolinians might pay a sales tax on a ballgame ticket, but they would pay less tax when they bought clothes for their children.

But what happens when North Carolinians take their children to a ballgame? A tax is a tax, period. How about the guvment just quit spending so much money?

And how interesting is it that the Journal would use a ballgame ticket as an example of a taxable service when taxpayers are already on the hook for the new downtown stadium?
