The headline on last Wednesday’s lead editorial in the Durham Herald-Sun is a great example of a piece that ignores a key point about higher education in this state. “Let UNC catch its breath on tuition” begins with the paper “wholeheartedly” endorsing the proposal to freeze tuition for a year at UNC schools made by Brad Wilson, UNC Board of Governors Chairman. It goes on to say that it’s time to “give parents and students a break.” Predictably absent from this editorial is an acknowledgement of exactly who funds the UNC system. In large part, that’s you and me. Just once I’d like to see a lead editorial that implores the General Assembly to let taxpayers catch their breath from shouldering the burden of this state’s tax policies.
