Oh happy day! It looks like Charlotte’s inane trolley barn plan is finally dead. CATS inability to come up with funds to renovate the South End building has triggered a clause allowing Crescent Resources to re-purchase the site for $1.38 million, or what Crescent got from the county when the county bought it back in 2003. So we’re square, right? Not exactly.

CATS says it spent $700,000 on ambitious design plans for the site as well as some demolition work, the start of what was a $5.2 million rebuild job. But the cost overruns in the South Blvd. light rail project left CATS short of funds to complete the barn work, which was moth balled in January to save money. And do not forget that the entire $40 million South End trolley will be moth balled for several months while work on the $450 million light rail line is completed.

So not so happy day.
