The federal government was smaller in 1929 than in 1923, thanks largely to the efforts of the President Calvin Coolidge. Biographer Amity Shlaes explained to a John Locke Foundation Headliner audience today why the 30th president felt compelled to cut tax rates, eliminated wasteful programs, and allow more decisions about the economy to remain in the private sector.
