• Ad wars: The presumed front-runners for each major party’s Senate nomination are on the air. Democrat Deborah Ross emphasizes economic security and “fairness.”

GOP incumbent Richard Burr highlights national security:

• The winners of a Beaufort County Republican Party straw poll were: Sen. Ted Cruz for president, Pat McCrory for governor, Dr. Greg Brannon for U.S. Senate, 3rd District Rep. Walter Jones for Congress, state Sen. Buck Newton for attorney general, and “no” on the Connect NC bond measure.

• In its editorial board endorsements, the •  picks Hillary Clinton and John Kasich in the Democratic and Republican presidential primaries; Burr and Spring Lake Mayor Chris Rey for the GOP and Democratic Senate spots; and for governor, McCrory and Durham attorney and Democrat Ken Spaulding.

• Meantime, Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper, who also wants McCrory’s job, says the General Assembly should not take any action blocking Charlotte’s ordinance protecting the rights of transgender residents (including the right to choose among public restrooms). McCrory says repealing the ordinance and preventing it from being enacted elsewhere should be lawmakers’ top priority when the short session convenes next month.
