The folks at FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) point out the case of a Drake student whose right to express his political opinion was squashed by university officials who wanted to herd him into a so-called “free speech zone” rather than allow him to express his view outside a Republican presidential debate. I don’t know what the student’s sign said, and I will take him at his word that it wasn’t vulgar. Regardless, the foundation of our free society is the right to speak our minds. What a shame that university officials fail to respect that right.
